Need Care Options for My Mother

by Admin 14. December 2009 18:41

I'll be moving back to the Pgh area and will need to make arrangements for my mother's care. What would be the best way to approach finding out what options are available?

How to Find In Home Care for My Mom

My 88 year old mother has dementia so I would like to know how to start the process of having someone provide in home care.

Problems at Dad's Personal Care Home

by Admin 14. October 2009 17:25

We just moved our Dad into a personal care home in the Pgh. area. Our Dad said he was getting little to eat. When we questioned the owner he said it was at the end of the month and money is tight. Don't these PCH have regulations to follow?

Mom's Home Caregiver is Unreliable

by Admin 12. October 2009 15:44

We have been paying a woman to come to my mother’s house and help her for a few months now. The woman was referred to us by a friend, but it’s not working out. She is unreliable about showing up and is not doing a good job with what we asked her to do. My mother is uncomfortable with the whole situation and frankly, is intimidated by the woman. And she is concerned about offending the friend who referred the woman to us. How can we handle this and what can we do better next time?

Mother Imagining Events

by Admin 23. September 2009 15:25
My mother is starting to imagine "events" that, in reality, haven't happened. Some of what she says is rather bizarre, and she realizes it, but swears that it's real. Otherwise, she seems fine and is fully functional. What are we dealing with, and how should we convince her to have herself evaluated? She insists that these "happenings" are real, and I'm sure that she won't be very willing to agree to professional help. Thanks!

Tip for a Confused Senior

by Admin 22. March 2009 16:48
When I was growing up in Illinois, my grandmother used to call a telephone number that gave the current date, time and temperature. I know a senior who recently moved to an assisted living facility in Monroeville, PA.  Do you know of a phone number such as this that she can call?  She does not have access to a computer and she rarely watches television, so I thought a phone number might giving her the current date and time might be nice.  She gets confused sometimes on what day it is, etc… Thanks for any help!

Encourage my Mother-In-Law to Socialize?

by Admin 18. March 2009 11:18

How can we encourage my mother-in-law to socialize more? She says she is lonely. People offer to drive her to church or activities, but she refuses to go out with anyone except her grown children. She is living alone since my father-in-law passed away 2 years ago, is in her 80s, and very healthy except for a few minor memory issues at times. She does not drive, and all of her adult children (and spouses) take turns with taking her shopping and generally getting her out of the house. We do our best, but we all have jobs and families too. We feel guilty because she is lonely. We don't want her to feel like a burden, but at the same time, it sure would help if she would let others take her out once in a while.

M-I-L with Huntington's and Depression

by Admin 7. February 2009 12:48

My mother in law has huntington disease in early stage. She is fully functional and living alone but has slipped into a serious depression despite medications. She is 61 years old and not quite ready for a nursing facility but cannot live alone anymore. She is presently on Disability. There is no money that can be paid towards a Personal Care facility. What are my options for her?
