BFF's Mom has Sudden Onset Dementia

by Admin 20. March 2010 20:31
My BFF's mom has sudden onset dementia due to anesthesia, with bilateral cerebral atrophy in the frontal lobes. She also has chronic pain from failed back surgery. Mom's home is in Westmoreland, but she is now living in Allegheny county (Monroeville.) Are there any local resources for respite, adult day or other care?
And how might she pursue speech therapy for a language deficit (word finding.) She has been assessed for stroke but that was negative. She has periods of clarity, and then complete confusion. Sometimes she just cannot find words.

Two key questions that help to determine what resources may be available are what her age is, and what her financial circumstances are.

If she is low income or medicaid eligible, and age 60 or over, she may qualify for services through the  Area Agency on Aging. We recommend that you contact the Area Agency on Aging and let them determine her eligibility, even if you aren't sure whether she will qualify.

If she is going to be staying in Allegheny County for a long term period, then contact the Allegheny Area Agency on Aging: 412-350-5460.

Other funding help may be available if she has long term care insurance, or if she was married to, or is herself, a veteran through the VA Aid and Attendance benefit: www.todaysseniorresource.com/closeup.asp

Find lists of the local Adult Day Care Services and Home Caregiver Services below:

Adult Day Care Services: www.todaysseniorresource.com/closeup.asp

Non Medical Home Care Services: www.todaysseniorresource.com/thumbnail.asp

PACE LIFE Programs,  provides a comprehensive all-inclusive package of services to folks who want to remain at home, including adult day care, home care, some transportation, health care, and more. For her location (both Eastern Allegheny and Westmoreland) the program would be Community LIFE, 412-664-1448

And for speech therapy, speak to her doctor. Speech therapy can be provided through a Home Health Care Agency. She must be referred by a physician to have it covered by her medical insurance or Medicare. Her physician will know if she is qualified to be referred. FYI - Anyone may request a specific Home Health Care Agency of their choice, (as long as the Agency accepts the person's insurance and covers their geographic location), just let your physician know which one you want to use.

Some Adult Day Cares also have therapy available at their centers, so if they decide to contact Adult Day Care Centers, that is a good question to ask them.
