How to Find In Home Care for My Mom

by Admin 23. October 2009 17:47
My 88 year old mother has dementia so I would like to know how to start the process of having someone provide in home care.

There are many (local) companies that provide home support services, including Caring Mission Home Care.  If you are considering going with such a company, make certain their caregivers are bonded, insured and covered under their company’s worker’s compensation plan (should they get injured “on the job”).  A private company, vs. one that is part of a corporation, will most likely be more flexible in the number of hours they are able to provide per visit, consistency in caregiver/s assigned, as well as with costs.

If you choose to find a caregiver on your own, you could advertise in the local paper, or through local churches.  I would recommend conducting first interviews elsewhere, i.e., a local restaurant, just for safety/privacy purposes.  Then, when you identify someone you feel meets your criteria, you could invite them into your home and see how they interact with your Mom.  Keep in mind, if you hire someone privately and they do get injured while on your property, that claim could go against yours, or your Mother’s homeowners insurance.  Always ask for at least 2 references!

Specific to your Mom, it will be important to have a caregiver who has experience working with individuals diagnosed with dementia, as approaches to care, companionship, etc. are a bit more specialized.

With respect to paying for home support services, consumers typically pay privately.  However, if someone has a long term care policy, or is a Veteran, or widow of a Veteran, there may be other funds available.  To qualify for such funding, the person must need assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and with medication management.  (If someone just needs help with housekeeping, or transportation, they will not qualify for these benefits).

If finances are a concern, contact your local Area Agency on Aging.  A representative will perform an assessment of your Mom (both medical and financial) and determine if she is eligible for funding through their programs.

I wish you all the best with this process.  Should you be interested in services provided by Caring Mission Home Care, please contact us at 1-866-922-7464 and feel free to ask for me, specifically.

Sincerely,
