Mother Imagining Events

by Admin 23. September 2009 15:25
My mother is starting to imagine "events" that, in reality, haven't happened. Some of what she says is rather bizarre, and she realizes it, but swears that it's real. Otherwise, she seems fine and is fully functional. What are we dealing with, and how should we convince her to have herself evaluated? She insists that these "happenings" are real, and I'm sure that she won't be very willing to agree to professional help. Thanks!

I would begin by requesting a thorough physical with the PCP, including blood work to rule out electrolyte imbalance, low B12 etc. You should talk to the PCP ahead of time and describe her specific behaviors. Her current medications should also be evaluated and her compliance with taking them is also important. She may be taking too much or not taking them at all. Is she hearing or sight impaired? This can cause misinterpretation of events. She would probably benefit from a consultation with a geriatric psychiatrist at some point to rule out dementia.

She may need support from the family - offer to go with her to the doctor and be present when the results are explained. This way, everyone is on the same page. The family should reinforce that there may be a very simple explanation for the symptoms but it will take some detective work to identify the cause. Hope this is helpful.
