Veterans Benefits for Assisted Living?

by Admin 21. June 2009 14:14
I have heard that veterans are eligible for funding if they are living in assisted living or other facilities. Is this correct, what are the requirements, and how do I find out more about it?

They (Veterans) are generally eligible depending on their income and what type of service they did.  You can contact the Governor's Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center at 1-800-442-6815 for information.

I’m not sure of the requirements but it is true that you can receive a benefit in AL (Assisted Living) facilities from the VA, the local VFW should be able to point you in the right direction.

"Aid and Attendance" an Under-Used Benefit  (from US Dept of Veterans Affairs website)

The Veterans' Pension Benefit could provide tax-free annual income of up to $21,615 for a couple; $18,234 for a veteran; and $11,715 for a widow or widower if either of your parents served in the armed services during a time of war.

Funding can be used to pay for specified medical expenses including: assisted living, home health aides, co-payments, and insurance premiums, prescription drugs, and more.

To Qualify:
Must have served at least 90 days in a branch of the armed services with at least one day of service during a period of war
Individuals with a dishonorable discharge are not eligible
Must meet basic income requirements

For more information on qualifying, or to apply, contact your local Veterans Affairs office or go to the benefits and pension area of the Department of Veterans Affairs website.
